Plastics are derived from organic products. Materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil used in the production of plastics are natural products.
Crude oil is a complex mixture of thousands of components, it needs to be processed in order to be useful. The production of plastic raw materials begins with the distillation process, which takes place at an oil refinery. The distillation process involves the separation of heavy crude oil into lighter groups called fractions. Each fraction is a mixture of hydrocarbon chains (chemical components made from carbon and hydrogen), which differ in molecular size and structure. One of these fractions, naphtha, is an extremely important element in the production of plastics.

Wide History
The use of plastics in our country began in about 1880. The plastic processing industry in Türkiye started to be established after 1955. With the large scale introduction of plastic to our daily lives, this branch of industry developed day by day and started to be used in many areas.
Plastics are lighter than metals, more insulating against heat and electricity, and have many advantages with their chemical and physical properties. They are more than raw materials, cheaper, and the manufacturing processes are simpler and more economical as a result.
Wide Ranks
Türkiye is able to compete with the European Union countries thanks to its high-quality production, especially in engineering plastics. In this respect, it has high competitive power in the global market. On the other hand, when considering the products for consumption, it is seen that the unit export prices across the sector are below the competing countries’ averages.
Looking at the plastic products used in the sectors (automotive, white goods, textile, etc.), it is mainly an export sector and the contribution of the sector to foreign trade on the basis of products is considerable. Significant proportion of firms operating in the sector are not only small and medium-sized enterprises, but also large-scale firms and multinational companies are operating in the sector.
